SWISS CLIMATE SUMMER SCHOOL

Scope

The 25th Swiss Climate Summer School focuses on the theme “A High-Resolution Perspective on Weather and Climate: From Processes to Impacts”. This summer school will provide an indepth introduction to high-resolution weather and climate modelling and its role in advancing our understanding of the climate system, extreme events, and their impacts. The main questions to be addressed during the summer school 2027 are:

  • Can kilometre-scale weather and climate models improve our understanding and projections of local extremes, such as storms, floods, droughts, and urban or marine heat-waves?
  • How does (sub-)kilometre-scale land surface heterogeneity influence regional-to-global water and energy cycling, and how do kilometre-scale ocean–climate models advance our understanding of heat, carbon, and biogeochemical transport?
  • Can synergies between kilometre-scale modelling and AI/ML approaches accelerate model development, enhance process understanding, and increase the usability of climate information?
  • How can high-resolution modelling and impact research be integrated to support local disaster preparedness, adaptation and mitigation, and climate information for risk management?

This summer school addresses early-career researchers from climate and Earth system sciences to data, impact, and social sciences. The one-week summer school is organised akin to a conference and is structured around keynote lectures by internationally renowned experts with ample time for discussions, poster sessions, workshops, and final discussion that involve lecturers and participants. All participants are expected to present a poster of their research.
