Scope

The 24th Swiss Climate Summer School is focusing on the theme “Climate Variability across Space and Time”. This theme has been chosen due to its paramount importance in terms of both scientific challenges and pressing societal concerns. Always with a focus on understanding system processes from observational and model perspectives, understanding sources of uncertainty, and implications for predictability and predictions, the specific topics include:

  • Climate variability across time from the past to the present
  • Climate variability across space from boundary layer processes to planetary scales
  • Sources of uncertainty, seasonal to decadal predictability
  • Implications for weather and climate predictions

This summer school addresses Early Career Researchers with a background in climate, engineering, environmental, economic, social and geosciences, among others. In addition to keynote lectures from internationally renowned experts and extensive time for discussions and poster sessions, two half days will be spent with workshops in smaller groups and hands-on practical work. An excursion will lead us to a scenic place with glaciers in the mountains. All Summer School participants are expected to present a poster of their research.

Lecturers for keynotes and workshops (confirmed)

Stefan Brönnimann (U Bern, CH); Francisco Doblas-Reyes (Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, E); Daniela Domeisen (U Lausanne, CH); Daniel Fenner (TU Berlin, D); Oliver Fuhrer (MeteoSwiss, CH); Martin Grosjean (U Bern, CH); Moritz Gubler (U Bern, CH); Sven Kotlarski (MeteoSwiss, CH); Thomas Laepple (AWI Potsdam, D); Jochem Marotzke (MPI Meteorology Hamburg, D); Frerk Pöppelmeier (U Bern, CH); Christoph Raible (U Bern, CH); Jan Rajczak (MeteoSwiss, CH); Olivia Romppainen-Martius (U Bern, CH); Sonia Seneviratne (ETH Zurich, CH); Isla Simpson (NCAR Boulder, USA); Bjorn Stevens (MPI Meteorology Hamburg, D)

The Summer School is open to Early Stage Researchers (PhD students and postdocs) worldwide. Participation is highly competitive and will be limited to a maximum of 70. The registration fee (1350 CHF) includes half board accommodation, excursion, and teaching material.
