Thomas Stocker takes over top position of the IPCC

Thomas Stocker, founding member of the Oeschger Centre, will co-chair the IPCC's 'science' working group. This working group, which involves the co-operation of more than a thousand researchers world-wide, is concerned with the scientific and technical aspects of climate change. Thomas Stocker, a professor of climate and environmental physics at the University of Bern, was elected at the 29th Plenary Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC also elected a second co-chairman, the Chinese climatologist Qin Dahe. Together, the two researchers will head the work for the preparation of the fifth assessment report on world climate expected for 2013. In Bern, Thomas Stocker will direct and coordinate half a dozen specialists that are gathering the latest findings on the causes and consequences of climate change.
