Youth from three countries experience the thrill of climate research

17 June 2014

The Oeschger Center will host the 2014 nano-Camp from 29 June until 4 July 2014. This research camp for high school students is coordinated by 3sat’s science television program “nano”, and is coming to Switzerland for the first time.

The well-established nano-Camp is in its 13th edition, and will again welcome 12 youth from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for a week of top-notch research. The students had to apply for one of the coveted spots in a selection process. “We were selecting from over 160 candidates,” says Johannes Steinbronn from the nano-editorial office. “The applications have never been this good.”

According to Steinbronn, the nano-Camp’s research partners are always “outstanding research facilities.” In previous years, the research camp has been hosted by Max-Planck institutions, the Humboldt University of Berlin, as well as the Ludwigs Maximilians University of Munich, among others. The basic concept of the camp was established during its first edition in 2002: to bring young students to University laboratories and start a conversation. This would awaken their scientific curiosity and stimulate their interest for discovering the unknown.

The young researchers, ranging in age from 16 to 18, will be introduced to various aspects of climate research by the Oeschger Center this summer. They will work with natural climate archives through the first-hand extraction of a sediment core from the Moossee by Bern. They will address the gap between climate science knowledge and public willingness to live a climate-friendly lifestyle by conducting a public survey in the city of Bern. The highlight of the camp will be a fieldtrip to Jungfraujoch, where the students will visit the high alpine research station and perform research on the Aletsch glacier with a team of glaciologists. A film crew from the nano science magazine will be following their every discovery, and produce a documentary for the 3sat TV network. This program will be aired on 5 September 2014
